6-Steps to Confidently Communicate for Meaningful, Respectful Relationships
I used to say that I had a lock on my throat chakra. At the time, that was the best way I could explain it. Now, I have realized that my deep seeded fear of expressing my true feelings and desires came from a very specific traumatic event when I was 4 years old.
I was 9 months into my sobriety journey when a repressed memory came back to me (at 39 years old). I remembered how when I was 4 years old, as I began to sob in grief over the death of my baby sister, my father sternly scolded, "Stop crying! Stop crying right now!" It was that moment that led to me knowing without a doubt that I was NOT SAFE to express myself freely.Â
And guess how that translated into my relationships? Yep, not so good. With the lack of feeling safe to express myself, I went from bad relationship to bad relationship. Not quite sure wtf I was doing wrong.Â
Learning Dialectical Behavior Therapy (or DBT) skills was the game changer! How the heck are we supposed to know how to express ourselves in an effective way when all we were shown was dysfunctional dynamics?

I originally learned DBT from Family Connections of NEABPD. Having a mother who struggles with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), I found myself desperate to understand wtf was happening.
